República de Guatemala has a great deal to offer visitors and it certainly isn’t difficult for any wanna-be adventurer to find something utterly captivating in this ancient civilization. Guatemala borders 4 other countries including Mexico to the north, and has coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea; it is one of the most biologically diverse counties in the world and contributes to Mesoamerica every single type of ecosystem; the Bosawas Rainforest, which is the 2nd largest in the World, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef are just two of the more well-known. There are 252 listed wetlands in Guatemala, which include 61 lagoons, 5 lakes, 100 rivers and 4 swamps and Tikal National Park was the first mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from the Pacific coast, Guatemala is a mountainous region and you will find all the major cities located either in the highlands or on the South coast. However, this doesn’t mean you have stay there - adventuring is a big part of what TEFL’s all about and Guatemala is certainly the place to do that! Its wonderful contrast in climates, between the countries hot and fauna-rich lowlands and its cooler mountain peaks, provides a wonderful array of backdrops and settings; the most prominent being the 4000 meter-tall Volcan Tajumulco (the highest in Central America).
Guatamala has an epic past, and with settlers dating back from between 12,000 to 18,000 years, it is Guatemala’s historical significance that is perhaps its greatest attraction. With an abundance of ancient ruins and unfathomable structures (mainly from the height of the Mayan period), unique landscapes, the elevation of its cities, and the large amount of fauna from its one-of-a-kind climate, all add up to give this county some of the most spectacular sites in the world today.
The Guatemalans are very proud of their indigenous culture and you’ll find the local people open, friendly, and very willing to chat with you. Tourism has become an increasing source of revenue for Guatemala and non-traditional exports have risen in recent years. Subsequently, this means the need to learn English is also on the rise...which is where you come in!
Your TEFL/TESOL course is located in the breath-taking city of La Antigua and sits 1500m above sea-level. It boasts Spanish-influenced Baroque architecture and some of the most amazing ruins visible today; because of this La Antigua is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts tourists and Guatamalans alike. For short excursions, a 40-minute bus ride will take you into Guatemala City, and the villages surrounding La Antigua are famous for their handcrafts. There are trips available to Lake Atitlan, Tikal, the Pacific Coast and the surrounding jungle, which are all just a few hours away. An abundance of activities are available throughout the day, and the night-life is just as lively – with the two central plaza’s being the focal points of the fun. With an assortment of clubs, bars and live music venues surrounding the Plaza area La Antigua at night is a lively place. The bars and restaurants are licensed up until 1am but for those of you who are late-nighters, La Antigua has a very active after-hours scene.
