Located in Central Valley, San Jose is the capital and largest city in the beautiful Costa Rica (literally meaning “Rich Coast” in Spanish) and is the focal point for the country’s political and economic affairs. Surrounded by mountains, charming villages and vast coffee plantations, San Jose is a modern city that is bustling with commerce, art, architecture, and enjoys a steady, warm climate all year round as its mean elevation is some 1600 meters above sea level. There is an extensive variety of recreational activities and social options to be enjoyed here and whatever your interests - hiking, surfing, beach life, eco-tourism, museums, - you’ll find something that appeals to you. If a tropical paradise with pristine beaches appeals to you, San Jose is both a great place to work and study.
Even if you have never particularly been a nature enthusiast, you’ll find it impossible to ignore the rich variety of plants and animals throughout Costa Rica. Around 25% of the land mass here is within either a national park or a protected area, which is not in the least bit surprising for a country that harbors a full 5% of the world’s biodiversity but takes up only 0.1% of the worlds land mass. In the Corcovado National Park visitors can see all four of the Costa Rican monkey species as well as an abundance of other wildlife. The Tortuguero National Park, Totuguero meaning “Full of Tutles”, is the most important nesting site for the endangered green turtle. There is around 800 species of birds that have so far been identified in Costa Rica, the world’s fastest lizard, the spiny-tailed iguana, the rare South American Squirrel Monkey and many, many more.
Recreationally, enjoy the “Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica”,
or, National Theatre, which puts on various entertainment throughout the
year with its dance groups and orchestral music presentations, as does its
neighbor, The Melico Salazar theatre. You’ll find San Jose to be a lively place
night; EL Pueblo has a mix of around 50 bars, clubs, restaurants, shops and art
galleries for you to explore, as you wonder down the traditional cobblestone
streets you’ll find the place becomes much more animated around 9pm and goes
right through till dawn. While studying on the TEFL course you might want to
consider joining some of the local students in Calle de la Amargura, in San Pedro,
where you’ll find a wide selection of restaurants and bars at relatively low,
student prices. If you’re feeling adventurous one morning go and check out "El
Parque de Diversiones de Costa Rica", Costa Rica’s only theme park, it
is modeled on 19th century San Jose and inside you’ll find a great
many museums to explore.
For our TEFL students, San Jose is a great place to both study and work, when taking time out from the course you’ll never be short of things to explore. There are some excellent teaching opportunities to be had here; the Costa Rican people are constantly looking to improve their English language skills in order to progress in the jobs market - this is reflected by the number of language schools now in the area of San Jose. With all the schools, private tuition, language centers, business professionals and NGO’s around, you’ll soon find that there is plenty of opportunity to teach here, and the cheap prices allow you to enjoy a great lifestyle exploring all the wonders that San Jose has to offer. Sound interesting?
