The capital of Chile, Santiago, is located in the country’s
central valley and has all the advantages of a cosmopolitan
global city against
the dramatic back-drop of the Andes mountain chain. It sits 1700 ft above sea
level and has enjoyed 3 decades of steady economic growth, subsequently making
it one of Latin America’s most modern metropolitan areas. You, the six million other residents of
Santiago, and your fellow TEFL students will never be short of things to do
here; the city boasts an array of museums, art galleries, restaurants, cultural
programs, pubs, nightclubs, beautiful gardens, theatres, and has the privilege
of being situated in arguably the most beautiful country in the world. Head East and you’ll come to the foot
of the Andes Mountains; heading North you’ll find haunting
desert landscapes and snow-covered volcanic cones rising to more than 20,000
feet. Re-group, drop your skis off in Santiago, then head West to the Pacific
Ocean and Chile’s never-ending coastline; as it’s only ever a maximum of 150
miles across your never too far away from that sea breeze. Heading south you’ll
find The Torres del Paine National Park, a world heritage site that would be on
even the most wearied of travelers’ must-see list. After all this excitement
it’s probably best you relax with a little wine tasting provided by one
of Chile’s famous vineyards.
The political and economical pull of Santiago means there is a far greater range of professional opportunities here and you’ll find the majority of English teaching positions available in Chile are in and around the city. Do not let this discourage you if you want to branch out once you’re TEFL certified, Chile’s recent drive to speak English has created teaching jobs nationwide and you’ll find the people of Chile very welcoming and receptive to foreigners.
